Feels like 2017 for Vardar

MOL-Pick Szeged as Vardar's last obstacle on the road to Cologne

Vardar

After winning their 5th SEHA title, which was also the third consecutive time they were crowned as SEHA – Gazprom League champions, Vardar are now focused on the quarter-final matchup in EHF Champions League. The 2017 champions are the only SEHA team left in European competitions, as they eliminated PPD Zagreb in the previous round, while Meshkov Brest were defeated by Flensburg, and Nexe could not get past the group stage of the EHF Cup.

Thursday, April 25th, 20:00 Vardar – MOL-Pick Szeged
The first match will be played in the already sold out SC Jane Sandanski, so no doubt it will be a massive match, with a lot of excitement being felt already among the home players and fans. Vardar will not be able to count on Christian Dissinger, who suffered an injury in the final match of the SEHA Final 4 versus PPD Zagreb, but Sergei Gorbok will be available. Gorbok who came back to Skopje from Pick Szeged, is back on the left back position, after a knee injury. One of the key players for Vardar will be another summer acquisition who came from Hungarian champions Pick Szeged, the in-form Stas Skube. There are two more players that are the linkage between these two clubs; Jorge Maqueda and Joan Canellas, who left Vardar last summer, and will look for a warm welcome in their previous home.

Vardar are again underdogs as stated by the captain Stoilov, which reminds so much of the situation in 2017 when Vardar shocked the handball world by lifting the European trophy for the first time. Now, they are in the quarter-finals for the sixth time in club’s history, looking for the third consecutive placement to the Final 4 in Cologne, Germany.

There are even more reminders to the famous 2016/17 season. Vardar again look to conquer Europe carried by the SEHA title from Brest, same as in 2017. Once again, they scored 26 in the final match, last time versus Veszprem, this year against PPD Zagreb. To top it all, once more Vardar had 4 players in the SEHA Final 4 All-star team and were led by a Spanish coach. Last time it was the legendary Raul Gonzalez, now it’s Roberto Garcia Parrondo who will look to lead this group of players towards the third consecutive journey to Cologne. Can they prove everyone wrong again?
